Sustainable painting with natural pigments

Ana's practice centers on making paint with natural ingredients and using materials that reduce reliance on traditional art-making processes: natural mineral pigments, plant-based mediums, sustainable canvas and wood panels, and colors drawn from substrates, muds, lakes, deserts, forests, jungles and rock formations.

The result is a body of work grounded in texture, layered transparencies and earth-based color. Rather than treating sustainability as a theme only, Ana builds it into the way the paintings are made.

Paint from nature

Plant-based medium, natural mineral pigments

Natural mineral pigments
Color comes from substrates and muds of lakes, deserts, forests and jungles, and from rock formations: rusty, marble, rocky, stony and charred tones ground into paint.
Plant-based mediums
Pigments are bound with plant-based mediums instead of petroleum-derived acrylics, reducing reliance on synthetic materials in the studio.
Sustainable supports
Paintings are built on sustainable stretched canvas, cotton canvas and wood panels, chosen to lower the footprint of each piece.
Layers, textures, doodles
Layers of paint with different transparencies and textures, finished with doodles that morph into humans and animals over nature and society.

Art rooted in border life and environmental repair

Ana's work is informed by a multicultural life across San Diego, Tijuana, London, Boston, Monterrey, Saltillo, Ensenada and Austin. As an eco artist, her creative practice responds to environmental damage, social systems, and the human responsibility to repair harm done to the earth.

Coastal cities like San Diego and Tijuana may be divided politically, but they share one ocean, one climate and one responsibility. That shared ground runs through the work, from Muégano to Old Funny Money.

From sustainability work to sustainable art

Before prioritizing her art practice, Ana spent 20 years in the sustainable energy industry and studied sustainability and circular economy topics. After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she adapted her life so that her passion for creating art could continue.

That shift brought together her corporate sustainability background, art education and material experimentation. Today, her paintings use creativity and resourcefulness to connect contemporary art with natural materials used across generations.
